Bishop Westcott Boys' School, located 12 km (7.5 mi) from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, is one of the oldest schools in the eastern region of India. Bishop Westcott Boys' School (BWBS) is located on the banks of Subarnarekha River in Namkum block. Presently, Richard Ion Thornton is the principal of the school.

This all boys school was founded in the year 1927 by Rt. Rev. Foss Westcott. The school building also served as a make shift hospital during the World War II.

Curriculum

This School is affiliated to ICSE board of curriculum. The profile of students is a mix of boarders (hostlers) and day scholars. Students from Nepal, Bangladesh and Burma add to the cultural diversity. The school has a sizable student representations from the Chinese origin, these Chinese families are settled in Kolkata and citizens of India.

The school also boasts of a well-developed sporting facility. Participation in sporting events are encouraged through dedicated sports hours for the boarding students. The school has facilities for soccer, cricket, volleyball, basketball, lawn tennis, table tennis, world standard pool and snooker, and horse riding.

The school has three canteens, called the Bakery Shop, The Witches Brew and The Retreat.

Ahtesham ahmed is most successful sports man of this school. The girls' counterpart of the boys' school is Bishop Westcott Girls' School.

History

The Bishop Westcott Boys' School was founded by the Right Rev. Dr. Foss Westcott,M.A. D.D. Ph.D. Bishop of Chotanagpur in 1927. The school is run by a managing committee formed by the governing body, which comprises eminent educators and citizens.

The school has 1800 students at present of which 935 are boarders. The School is affiliated to the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi for class 10 and class 12 (Science and Commerce). Plus two section is Co-educational (boarding is available for boys only).

Location

The school is situated in Namkum, nine km (six miles) east of Ranchi, on the banks of the Subarnarekha River, near the Namkum Railway station. The boys' school and the girls' school were within a single campus but were separated after an Army Hospital was built in between.

The campus

It originally consisted of a C shaped building and other buildings were erected later.

It now consists of an office building, the same old C shaped building, a new hostel building, a building that has the Library and the Laboratory, an auditorium, a juniors hostel, sick room, servants' quarter, staffs' residence, principal's bungalow and playgrounds. A building has been added recently that has the hostels.

Alumni association

The school has founded an Alumni Association "EWA" Ex-Westcottian Alumni.Its a combined Alumni of Boys school as well as Bishop Westcott Girls' School. Dr Satish Midha is its Founder President and Sandeep Anand is its founder Hony Secretary , repeated for 2nd Term.Present president for 2010-12 is Ms Jacqueline Edwin. The Patrons of Alumni is both the principals Mr R I Thornton & Ms N Jacobs.
